Meaning: behaving confidently and able to say in a direct way what you want or believe.
Being assertive means being able to stand up for your own or other people’s rights in a calm and positive way, without being aggressive or passively accepting ‘wrong’.
This word "ASSERTIVE" is an interpersonal skills on its own, to be portrayed during communication or any form of expressing ourselves. The above definition also depicts that an assertive behavior is the midpoint for an aggressive and passive communication.
As humans with respect to our state of mind or emotions, we sometimes can't predict how our expression would be when trying to pass a message or share our idea on what we think is right and must be accepted regardless of what others think or how they would feel.
The following qualities are to be seen in an assertive person; Honesty, Boldness, Firmness, Compassionate, Humble, Persistence, Integrity, Respect, Empathy, Patience and to top it all, Good communication etiquette either verbally or body language.
Another best way to be assertive is by learning Emotional Intelligence. It is obvious that we humans have different character traits but we often don't take time to understand our environment and other people's state of mind. At that instance when we desperately want to be heard might not be the other person's time to listen. The way we present our message or opinion determines how well we are heard and understood without causing any grievance.
An aggressive person expects to be heard by slamming an idea or opinion in a rude, impatient and annoying manner thereby hurting the listeners feelings. Also, a passive behavior only makes you remain in your own shell or keep accepting other people's ideas because you don't want to look bad or deny the other person's request.
Assertiveness allows you to speak your mind confidently and express yourself without hurting other people's feelings as well as your own feelings.
YOU can be assertive when you learn to control your anger and emotions. Then, your communication will be heard and might be taken into action if considered Valuable. It also help you to Earn Respect and Attention of people in a situation where an idea is needed.
Confidence is not only needed to express yourself but mixed with Empathy and Politeness to be well understood.
